Join the Center for Asian American Media (CAAM) and Comcast NBCUniversal on Tuesday, December 17, 2019 at Roxie Theater (3117 16th Street San Francisco CA 94103) as we celebrate the breathtaking 4K restoration of seminal Asian American film, Thousand Pieces of Gold. This special screening will include the San Francisco premiere of the newly restored film and Q and A with Director Nancy Kelly and Producer Kenji Yamamoto. RSVP is now closed. Seats are on a first-come, first-served basis. Early arrival is recommended to secure place in line. Please dress accordingly as line will be formed outside of the theater.
Set in the 1880s, Thousand Pieces of Gold chronicles the journey of Lalu (Rosalind Chao, most recently at CAAMFest37 for The Joy Luck Club reunion screening), a Chinese woman who is sold by her family and sent to the United States. Forced into prostitution by her sleazy husband (played by Michael Paul Chan, also guest at CAAMFest37), Lalu takes a stand and begins to shape her own destiny. WATCH TRAILER
